² that you may tell your children^(A) and grandchildren how I dealt harshly^(B) with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.”^(C)

²⁶ And when your children^(A) ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’

²⁷ then tell them, ‘It is the Passover^(A) sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’”^(B) Then the people bowed down and worshiped.^(C)

⁸ On that day tell your son,^(A) ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ ⁹ This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand^(B) and a reminder on your forehead^(C) that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.^{(D) 10} You must keep this ordinance^(E) at the appointed time^(F) year after year.

¹⁴ “In days to come, when your son^(A) asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.^{(B) 15} When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.’^{(C) 16} And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead^(D) that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.”

⁹ Only be careful,^(A) and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach^(B) them to your children^(C) and to their children after them.

¹⁰ Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb,^(A) when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn^(B) to revere^(C) me as long as they live in the land^(D) and may teach^(E) them to their children.”

⁶ These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.^{(A) 7} Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.^{(B) 8} Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.^{(C) 9} Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.^(D)

¹⁰ When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,^{(E) 11} houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig,^(F) and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied,^{(G) 12} be careful that you do not forget^(H) the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

¹³ Fear the Lord^(I) your God, serve him only^(J) and take your oaths^(K) in his name.^{(L) 14} Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; ¹⁵ for the Lord your God^(M), who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. ¹⁶ Do not put the Lord your God to the test^(N) as you did at Massah. ¹⁷ Be sure to keep^(O) the commands of the Lord your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you.^{(P) 18} Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight,^(Q) so that it may go well^(R) with you and you may go in and take over the good land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors, ¹⁹ thrusting out all your enemies^(S) before you, as the Lord said.

²⁰ In the future, when your son asks you,^(T) “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?” ²¹ tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.^{(U) 22} Before our eyes the Lord sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. ²³ But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. ²⁴ The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God,^(V) so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.^{(W) 25} And if we are careful to obey all this law^(X) before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.^(Y)”
